One of the principal fault lines facing members of Congress is the tension between increased spending on the farm safety net (crop insurance and commodity supports) and preserving the Inflation Reduction Act’s historic investment in conservation. Congress has not identified enough funding to do both\, so elected officials are aligning with one camp or the other. \nThe groups advocating for higher subsidies are large\, well-funded\, and well-connected. While the farm safety net is critical to our agricultural system\, it is far from perfect. The crop insurance and commodity programs pick winners and losers\, disincentivize conservation practices\, and demand a price tag that cannot be sustained. \nConvincing Congress to upend the safety net status quo is an uphill battle\, and they won’t address this problem without farmer input. Do you want to advocate for a more fiscally and environmentally responsible farm safety net? Join our evening webinar to learn more about this issue and identify opportunities to make your voice heard. \nPhoto credit: Lise Metzger\, Farm Aid\nNotes\n\nRecordings will be provided to registrants within two weeks of the live event.\nQuestions? Contact events@pasafarming.org.\nStay updated by signing up for our policy-focused newsletter. However\, confusion still remains around the issue of stormwater management\, and farmers in some Pennsylvania townships are being asked to meet costly\, time-consuming requirements.  \nExplore this issue with us during this lunchtime webinar. The commission will also work to address discrimination and perpetuation of disparities among farmers who might benefit from USDA assistance. Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture Secretary Redding is one of 15 members of the subcommittee on agriculture and rural economic development appointed to this prestigious group\, and has had a front-row seat in the discussions to make changes and improvements. The diversity and quality of committee members is also remarkable\, and looks nothing like any other previous USDA committees.  \nWhile the committee has only been operating for six months\, recommendations are already forming\, and USDA administrators are already taking actions to encourage access\, equity\, and a fairer playing field through executive action and through the courts.  \nWe will ask Secretary Redding for an update on the inner-workings of the committee. He’ll also share his personal philosophy on the importance of diversity and inclusion and discuss his approach to growing equity here  in Pennsylvania. Then he wants to hear from you! Tiffin Indian Restaurants in Philadelphia experienced tremendous growth during the take-out boom\, but the owners (and their customers) were concerned about the mounting environmental impact of single-use plastic. Circular Philadelphia\, a group that advocates for reusing materials\, sharing resources\, and reducing waste\, knew there had to be a better way. They investigated options and found a local group ECHO Systems offering reusable\, trackable to-go containers. We’ll examine how factors like growing climate\, management practices\, and variety have the potential to broadly impact nutrient density. \nThe Bionutrient Food Association founder and life-long farmer Dan Kittredge and co-founder of OurSci Dan TerAvest have been studying samples from farms across the country to help us better understand connections between the way food is grown and its nutrient content. Pasa partners with The Bionutrient Institute and OurSci to measure the nutrient content of crops grown by several farmers participating in our Soil Health Benchmark Study. Farmer Steve Groff of Cedar Meadow Farm will share insights he’s gained from participating in this study. \n\n\nNotes\n\nRegistration closes one hour prior to the event.\nRecordings will be provided to registrants within one to two weeks of the live event.\nQuestions? In 2020\, massive changes took place in the way customers buy food for their households– making more purchases online in a way that does not allow them to personally judge the sanitation associated with what their family eats. This makes the FSMA core concept of “proactively identifying hazards to food safety and the ways to take control” of larger importance to food entrepreneurs. \nThis webinar provides an introduction to FSMA impacts on food businesses\, and the due diligence necessary to address challenges to safe food for legal sales. Participants will learn how: \n– Pre-venture enterprises can factor in necessary steps and expense\n– Retail food businesses can vet local food suppliers’ compliance with FSMA\n– Farmers adding value can comply with Good Manufacturing Practices and FSMA rules\n– Current food producers wanting to legally sell wholesale or via eCommerce can work toward compliance with the FSMA Preventive Controls for Human Food rule. \nIn short\, all food businesses will benefit from attending “The Importance of Food Safety: An Introduction to the Food Safety Modernization Act” to manage today’s business challenges and tomorrow’s growth in the marketplace. \nInstructions:\nThe same session is being held at two different times: Wednesday\, June 8 from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. (Sign up here: https://pasbdc.ecenterdirect.com/events/29520) or Wednesday\, June 8 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. (Sign up here: https://pasbdc.ecenterdirect.com/events/29521). \nThese sessions are provided at no cost\, but space is limited and pre-registration is required. With increasingly extreme weather\, the number of unsafe outdoor workdays is likely to climb.  \nThe Biden administration recently announced an effort to protect workers from heat stress\, including plans to develop a federal heat standard. How is this issue being addressed at the state level? What steps can farmers take to lessen or mitigate the impacts on workers? \nJoin us for a virtual lunchtime discussion with a group of panelists who’ll address this issue from the farmer\, farmworker\, and policy perspectives. \nPhoto credit: Kyle Stapp \nSpeakers\n\nElena Velez\, LLC Certified Healthcare Interpreter\nJennifer Glenister\, Operator at New Morning Farm\nNina Berryman\, Farm Manager at Weavers Way Farm\nSara Nicholas\, Policy Strategist at Pasa\n\nNotes:\n\nOnline registration closes one hour prior to the event.\nRecordings will be provided to registrants within one to two weeks of the live event.\nQuestions? DESCRIPTION:Vegetable farms that sell their produce through farmers markets\, CSA programs\, on-farm stores\, and other direct-market channels are the foundation of local food movements everywhere. Yet there is surprisingly little information available to help answer a basic question: Can farmers make a middle-class income selling vegetables through direct-market outlets? \nWe launched an ongoing study in 2017 to help fill this critical gap in information and offer insights that could help vegetable farmers start and grow their businesses. Our new report\, Financial Benchmarks for Direct-Market Vegetable Farms\, offers the most comprehensive review of direct-market vegetable farm businesses to date\, sharing detailed financial benchmarks from 39 farms collected over three years. \nDuring this webinar\, we’ll review our findings and answer your questions. We’ll also share three strategies farms can use to boost financial success and explain how direct-market vegetable farmers can participate in this vital ongoing project. \nSpeakers\n\nFranklin Egan\, Education Director at Pasa\nSarah Bay Nawa\, Research Coordinator at Pasa\n\nNotes:\n\nOnline registration closes one hour prior to the event.\nRecordings will be provided to registrants within one to two weeks of the live event.\nQuestions?
